Tracing a Horse's Hoof for Accurate Renegade Hoof Boot Fitting

Tracing a Horse's Hoof for Accurate Renegade Hoof Boot Fitting

Selecting the right size Renegade hoof boot is crucial for ensuring optimal fit, comfort, and protection for your horse. Renegade Hoof Boots are designed to provide a precise fit, but it all starts with accurate hoof measurements. Incorrect measurements can lead to boots that are too tight or too loose, both of which can cause retention issues. Note that this is one method among many and may not be as accurate as using a tape measure over the actual hoof.

Accurate hoof measurements are essential for the following reasons:

  • Comfort: A properly fitting hoof boot will prevent discomfort and irritation, allowing your horse to move freely and comfortably.
  • Protection: A well-fitting boot provides optimal protection against injuries, such as concussions and bruises.
  • Performance: A properly fit boot can help improve your horse's performance by providing stability and support.
  • Longevity: A correctly sized boot will last longer, as it won't be subjected to excessive stress or wear and tear or be subject to retention issues that can result in damage.

To ensure a perfect fit, it's essential to take accurate hoof measurements before purchasing Renegade Hoof Boots. Please visit our Sizing Guide for more information or to request a personalized sizing request.

Here's a simple method for creating a hoof tracing.

Materials:

  • A thin piece of cardboard (like a cereal box)
  • A pencil, pen or fine tip marker
  • Contractor's metal measuring tape
  • Scissors

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the cardboard: Cut a piece of cardboard large enough to accommodate your horse's hoof.
  2. Prepare your horse and area: Clean your horse's hooves and provide a clean, flat area with good lighting. Have fly spray or mask and sheet available so that your horse will stand still.
  3. Find an assistant: It can help to have somebody hold your horse or to help with taking photos.
  4. Position the horse: Ensure the horse is standing on a level surface. This will provide the most accurate tracing
  5. Place the cardboard: Place the cardboard under the horse's hoof, making sure it's flat and even and goes completely underneath the entire hoof.
  6. Trace the hoof: Carefully trace around the hoof's outline, getting as close as you can next to the heel bulbs.
  7. Cut out the tracing: Using a pair of scissors, carefully cut out the traced shape.
  8. Label the tracing: Write your horse's name and identify which hoof it is on the cutout.
  9. Check the fit: Hold the cutout tracing up to the bottom of the hoof. It should fit evenly around without any gaps or overhang.
  10. Measure the hoof: Once you're satisfied with the fit, measure the width at the widest point of the tracing and the length from the toe to the end of the heel weight-bearing area. These measurements will help you determine the correct size of Renegade Hoof Boots for your horse.
  11. Compare your measurements: Double check that you get the same measurements with your tracing as you do on your horse's hoof.

    Tips:
  • Always measure both (or all four) hooves, as there may be slight variations in size if you are fitting for both fronts or hinds.
  • You may consider taking hoof tracings recently after a trim and then again at the trim cycle.
  • You can include photos of your tracings with the tape measure showing both measurements for each hoof to us through our Sizing Request form.

By following these steps, you can ensure that your horse's Renegade Hoof Boots fit properly and provide optimal protection and comfort.
